What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students carry prior vocabulary strategies into the next high school expectation. They use context, word parts, and reference tools to determine and explain meaning rather than guess.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can infer a reasonable meaning, identify the evidence used, and confirm the choice with a reference source. They revise an initial guess when stronger evidence points elsewhere.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a meaning from a familiar-looking word part and ignore sentence context. They may copy the first dictionary definition without checking whether it fits the passage.
How to Assess It
- Give students a three-sentence passage with one unfamiliar word underlined. Ask them to define it, cite two clues, and explain how they checked the meaning.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups context strips and word-part cards, then have them build and justify possible meanings for four unfamiliar words.
Ask students to write: Which clue best supports your meaning, and why is another possible meaning weaker?
Play a four-corner meaning game where students choose a definition, move, and cite a context clue before earning a point.
Compare one word used in a news headline, advertisement, and social post, then discuss how context changes its meaning.
