What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students take more responsibility for learning unfamiliar and useful words. They use context, word parts, and reference tools to find and confirm meanings.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify words that matter to understanding a text. They infer a likely meaning, verify it with a reliable source, and use the word accurately in a new context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often copy the first dictionary definition without checking the sentence. They may ignore word parts, context clues, or the word's part of speech. Some choose rare words instead of words that affect understanding.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short paragraph with one bold unfamiliar word. Ask them to infer its meaning, name two clues, verify the meaning, and use it in a new sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a short article, sticky notes, and dictionaries; they mark two useful unfamiliar words, infer meanings, then verify them.
Ask students, "Which unfamiliar word matters most in this paragraph, and what evidence supports your meaning?"
Play a context clue relay where teams infer a highlighted word, identify the clue type, and confirm the meaning.
Have students examine a job posting, select three field-specific words, define them from context, and explain why applicants need them.
