What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students build a set of reading and writing strategies, such as questioning, annotating, summarizing, outlining, and revising. They choose and adjust strategies based on the text and task.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students select strategies that fit the text, purpose, and difficulty. They apply them correctly, explain their choices, and switch approaches when the first one does not work.

Common Misconceptions

Students may use the same strategy for every task, such as highlighting without a clear purpose. They may also name a strategy but fail to show how it improved their understanding or writing.

How to Assess It

Give students a 150-word passage and a rough paragraph. Ask them to annotate the passage, revise one sentence, and explain why each chosen strategy fits the task.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups strategy cards and sample tasks, then have them match each task with a useful strategy and justify their choices.

  2. Ask students to write which strategy helped them understand or improve a text today, with evidence showing that it worked.

  3. Play Strategy Switch: students draw a task card, choose a strategy in 30 seconds, and earn a point for a sound explanation.

  4. Have students compare how they would read a bus schedule, news article, and job application, then plan each approach.
