What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students select verb tenses and aspects that match a sentence’s intended mood. They use verb forms to show facts, commands, possibilities, wishes, and hypothetical situations.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose verb forms that clearly show facts, commands, possibilities, wishes, or hypothetical situations. They keep tense and aspect consistent unless a meaning change requires a shift.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think verb mood means the emotion of a sentence. They often use “was” instead of “were” in contrary-to-fact statements or shift tense without meaning to. They may also confuse perfect and progressive aspects.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Rewrite “Jordan submits the assignment” to show a completed fact, a possibility tomorrow, and a wish about yesterday. Underline each verb phrase.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Sort sentence strips into fact, command, possibility, wish, and hypothetical groups, then change one verb phrase to create a different mood.

  2. Compare “Maya was here” and “If Maya were here,” then write two sentences explaining how the verb change affects meaning.

  3. Draw mood, time, and aspect cards, then transform a base sentence to match all three cards and earn a point.

  4. Collect a weather forecast, school rule, and advertisement, then label how each source uses verbs to express certainty, commands, or possibility.
