What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students select verb tenses and aspects that match a sentence’s intended mood. They use verb forms to show facts, commands, possibilities, wishes, and hypothetical situations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose verb forms that clearly show facts, commands, possibilities, wishes, or hypothetical situations. They keep tense and aspect consistent unless a meaning change requires a shift.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think verb mood means the emotion of a sentence. They often use “was” instead of “were” in contrary-to-fact statements or shift tense without meaning to. They may also confuse perfect and progressive aspects.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Rewrite “Jordan submits the assignment” to show a completed fact, a possibility tomorrow, and a wish about yesterday. Underline each verb phrase.

Ways to Teach It
Sort sentence strips into fact, command, possibility, wish, and hypothetical groups, then change one verb phrase to create a different mood.
Compare “Maya was here” and “If Maya were here,” then write two sentences explaining how the verb change affects meaning.
Draw mood, time, and aspect cards, then transform a base sentence to match all three cards and earn a point.
Collect a weather forecast, school rule, and advertisement, then label how each source uses verbs to express certainty, commands, or possibility.
