What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use a colon after a complete clause when more detail follows. They check that the words before the colon could stand as a sentence.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly place a colon after a complete clause. They can use it before a list, example, or explanation and explain why a colon fits.

Common Misconceptions

Students often place a colon directly after a verb or preposition, as in “She brought: pencils and paper.” They may also confuse colons with semicolons or capitalize every word after a colon.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: “Revise the sentence with a colon: Our class needs three supplies pencils paper and markers.” Ask students to explain the placement.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sentence strips with clauses and lists, then have them arrange each sentence and place a colon card correctly.

  2. Ask students to write one sentence explaining a classroom rule, using a colon before the explanation.

  3. Play Colon Check: teams correct sentences on cards and earn a point for each accurate correction and explanation.

  4. Examine recipes, event notices, or instruction sheets, then identify how colons organize lists and explanations for readers.
