What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students place a colon after a complete clause that introduces a formal or emphasized quotation. They also use quotation marks, capitalization, and end punctuation correctly.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can write a complete introductory clause, place a colon after it, and follow with a quotation. The student can also explain why a comma fits some introductions while a colon fits others.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use a colon after an incomplete phrase, such as “The author says:” They may also confuse colons with commas or place the colon inside the quotation marks.
How to Assess It
- Give students this prompt: “Write one sentence introducing a quotation from a class text with a complete clause and a colon.” Check colon placement and quotation punctuation.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips with introductory clauses and quotations, then have them match the strips and add colons where needed.
Ask students to explain: “Why does a colon work after ‘The speaker made one promise’ but not after ‘The speaker said’?”
Run a punctuation sort using sentence cards labeled colon, comma, or no punctuation, then review disputed choices as a class.
Have students find a colon introducing a quotation in a news article, then write a similar sentence about a school event.
