What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use a colon after a complete clause when more specific information follows. They check that the words before the colon can stand alone as a sentence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students write a complete clause before the colon, then add information that clarifies it. They can use the mark correctly before a series, an example, or a fuller explanation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may place a colon directly after a verb or preposition, as in “I packed: shoes and socks.” They may also confuse colons with semicolons or capitalize every word that follows a colon.
How to Assess It
- Give students this exit ticket: “Rewrite the sentence correctly using a colon: Our class needs three supplies paper pencils and folders.” Ask them to explain why the colon belongs there.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips and colon cards, then have them place each colon correctly and explain whether it introduces details or clarification.
Ask students to write two versions of a sentence, one with a colon and one without, then discuss how the punctuation changes emphasis.
Play Colon Fix-It: teams correct flawed sentences on mini whiteboards and earn a point only when they can explain each change.
Examine menus, schedules, recipes, and advertisements, then rewrite three examples so a complete clause comes before each colon.
