What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students study how writers and creators combine words, images, sound, layout, and genre features. They create messages that fit a clear audience and purpose, then explain their craft choices.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose a fitting format, such as an infographic, video, podcast, or digital post. They combine words, images, sound, layout, and genre features to guide a specific audience. They can explain how each choice supports their purpose.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add a random image and assume the text is effectively multimodal. They may change colors or fonts without linking those choices to the audience or purpose. Some keep the same tone and details even when the audience changes.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Turn “The library will close at 4:00” into a message for seventh graders using words and one visual feature. Label the purpose and explain one design choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups chart paper, markers, and magazine images to redesign a plain school announcement for students, families, or staff.

  2. Ask students to explain how one image, heading, and wording choice changes a message for a chosen audience.

  3. Play Audience Switch: teams draw an audience card and revise the same message using a fitting genre, layout, and tone.

  4. Have students create a bus safety post with a caption, icon, and call to action for the school social media feed.
