What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students examine how words, images, audio, layout, and genre choices shape a message for a defined audience. They create media that combines several forms and uses deliberate choices to inform, persuade, or entertain.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can explain how layout, sound, visuals, wording, and genre affect an audience. They can combine several forms into a clear product and justify each major design choice.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add images or music that look appealing but do not support the message. They may also mix formats without considering audience, purpose, accessibility, or credibility.

How to Assess It

Show a public service post and ask students to identify two craft choices and explain each effect. Then have them revise one element for a different audience.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a news article, chart paper, and markers, then have them redesign its message as an infographic for ninth graders.

  2. Compare a podcast clip and its transcript, then write which craft choices better persuade graduating seniors and why.

  3. Play Audience Switch: teams draw an audience card and revise the same announcement using fitting headlines, visuals, tone, and format.

  4. Create a one-minute school parking safety video using narration, captions, evidence, and images for student drivers.
