What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students compare words or phrases that share a basic meaning but carry different tones or levels of intensity. They check print or digital references before choosing precise language for speaking or writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can explain how two similar words differ in tone, strength, or implied meaning. They use a dictionary or thesaurus to select a word that fits their audience and purpose.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat synonyms as interchangeable or choose the longest word because it sounds stronger. They may rely only on a thesaurus and ignore tone, context, or usage notes.

How to Assess It

Give students this exit ticket: Replace “thin” in a character description with “slender,” “scrawny,” or “lean.” Choose one, cite a dictionary entry, and explain the effect.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Sort cards labeled confident, proud, arrogant, and smug from positive to negative, then check each placement with a dictionary.

  2. Discuss which verb best describes a character leaving a room: walked, marched, stormed, or slipped, and defend the choice with context.

  3. Play a synonym challenge where teams replace a bland word, then earn points for matching the assigned tone and explaining their source.

  4. Compare wording in two product reviews, then revise one adjective to make the review sound more favorable or more critical.
