What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify historical, cultural, social, or situational details connected to a text. They explain how those details affect author choices and audience reactions. They also consider context when creating their own texts.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students connect a specific contextual detail to the author’s word choice, tone, image, or organization. They predict different audience responses with evidence and adapt their own message for a new audience.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat context as only the time and place of a story. They may assume every audience reacts alike or give opinions without connecting them to contextual evidence.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short school announcement and two audience profiles, students and parents. Ask them to name one author choice and explain each audience’s likely response.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups context cards and text excerpts, then have them match each context to an author choice and explain the connection.
Ask students to write how a joke, warning, or protest message might affect two audiences differently and why.
Play Context Detective, teams earn points by finding a contextual clue and linking it to a specific word, image, or tone.
Compare the same weather warning from a phone alert, television report, and school email, then discuss how audience changes each version.
