What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students track how a character responds to a central problem and changes from beginning to end. They connect that change or solution to a message, using details from the text.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students state a clear theme and describe the character before and after the main conflict. They use specific events to explain how the change or solution reveals the theme.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name a one-word topic, such as friendship, instead of stating a message about friendship. They may retell events without explaining how the character’s change supports the message.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to answer: “What message does the story suggest, and how does the character’s response to the main problem reveal it?” Require two details.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups story event cards to sequence, then label the character’s conflict, key choice, final change, and possible theme.
Ask students to write: “How would the theme change if the character made the opposite choice at the turning point?”
Play Theme Evidence Match by having teams pair theme statements with character actions from a shared short story and defend each match.
Use a short news profile of an athlete or community leader, then connect the person’s challenge and response to a broader message.
