What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students describe the main character using traits supported by the character’s words and actions. They explain how those choices help reveal the story’s lesson or moral.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student names an accurate trait, such as brave, kind, or persistent. The student cites a character’s words or actions and explains how that evidence supports the story’s lesson.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name a character’s appearance or temporary feeling instead of a trait. They may state a lesson without connecting it to the character’s words or actions.
How to Assess It
- Ask: “What trait describes the Mouse in The Lion and the Mouse? Use one action to show how that trait supports the story’s lesson.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs trait cards and event cards from a familiar story, then have them match each trait to supporting character evidence.
Ask students to write: “The character is ___ because ___. This helps teach readers that ___.”
Play Trait Detective by reading character actions aloud and having teams identify the trait and explain their evidence.
Present a playground problem, then ask students which character trait could help solve it and what lesson the class could learn.
