What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use nearby sentences to infer what a new word or idea means. They also use familiar prefixes, roots, suffixes, and academic terms to refine that meaning.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a grade-level passage, students state a reasonable meaning and cite the exact words or word parts that support it. They revise an initial guess when later clues point elsewhere.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose the first familiar definition, even when it does not fit the sentence. They may rely on one clue or misread a prefix as the entire meaning.

How to Assess It

Give students this sentence: “Unlike surface animals, the mole lives in subterranean tunnels beneath the soil.” Ask them to define subterranean, underline a context clue, and circle a helpful word part.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs context clue cards and prefix, root, and suffix tiles to build and explain meanings for five unfamiliar words.

  2. Ask students to compare two possible meanings for a highlighted word and write which one fits, using evidence from the paragraph.

  3. Play Word Detective, where teams earn points for identifying a word part, locating a clue, and proposing a fitting meaning.

  4. Use an unfamiliar term from a science article, product label, or school notice and have students explain it without opening a dictionary.
