What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students help set clear routines for talking about books and sharing writing. They listen without interrupting, build on others’ ideas, and use text details in discussion. They offer useful comments and choose how to respond when classmates comment on their work.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students follow agreed routines without repeated reminders. They refer to details when discussing a text and share their own writing clearly. They give specific, kind feedback and decide whether a suggestion will improve their work.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think feedback means fixing every error or saying only, “I liked it.” Some interrupt, focus on the writer instead of the writing, or defend their work without listening. Others mistake agreement for good discussion and avoid adding a different idea.
How to Assess It
- Use a partner exit conference with a short paragraph. Each student must share, listen without interrupting, give one specific comment, and explain how they might use the feedback.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups norm cards to sort into “helps our community” and “hurts our community,” then create a five-rule class chart.
Read a short passage, then ask, “Which detail shaped your thinking, and how does your idea connect with a classmate’s?”
Play Feedback Match: students pair sample comments with labels for specific, kind, useful, or too vague, then revise the weak comments.
Study feedback used by editors or game designers, then have students test one suggestion on a draft and explain the result.
