What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students help set clear routines for talk and peer review. They discuss shared readings, present their own drafts, listen closely, give specific feedback, and decide how to use comments in revision.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students follow agreed routines without reminders and build on classmates’ points with evidence from the reading. During workshops, they share a draft, give useful comments tied to the writer’s goal, and explain which feedback they used or declined.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think participation means talking often, agreeing with friends, or saying only "good job." They may treat feedback as proofreading, take criticism personally, or assume every suggestion must be used.
How to Assess It
- In groups of three, have students read a 150-word draft aloud, record one peer’s specific comment, and name one revision they will make. Check for turn-taking, attentive listening, draft-based feedback, and a clear response.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups behavior cards, such as interrupting, citing lines, and vague praise, then sort them into helpful and harmful workshop norms.
Read a short editorial, then ask, "Which claim is strongest, and what response from a classmate changed your thinking?"
Run a feedback carousel where students rotate among anonymous paragraphs and leave one specific strength and one actionable question at each stop.
Stage an editorial meeting where students pitch a school newspaper piece, hear peer notes, and choose one revision to make.
