What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students select reading and writing approaches that fit a specific task. They notice when understanding or drafting breaks down, try another approach, and explain what helped.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students independently choose a useful approach, such as rereading, annotating, planning, or revising. They can explain why they chose it and switch approaches when it does not help.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think one strategy works for every text or writing task. They may use a strategy only because the teacher named it, without checking whether it helped. Some stop after getting confused instead of trying another approach.

How to Assess It

Give students a short passage and a related writing prompt. Ask them to name one strategy used for each task and explain how each strategy helped.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs strategy cards and a short passage; they choose, use, and swap cards when meaning breaks down.

  2. Ask students to write about a time rereading, sketching, outlining, or revising helped them understand or communicate an idea.

  3. Play Strategy Match by having teams pair reading and writing problems with useful strategy cards, then defend each match.

  4. Compare choosing a text strategy to selecting a tool for a recipe, game guide, assembly sheet, or message to a friend.
