What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students contribute ideas, ask helpful questions, and listen closely to others. They share tasks and use group input to investigate, make decisions, and create or revise a text.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student stays on topic, explains ideas, asks useful questions, and responds directly to classmates. The student completes an assigned role and helps the group reach a decision or produce a clear shared text.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think taking turns is enough, even when they ignore or repeat classmates’ ideas. Some divide the work into separate pieces but never combine, discuss, or revise them together.

How to Assess It

Ask groups, “Which class recess change would help students most?” Each student must offer an idea, ask a follow-up question, and reference a classmate’s comment before the group writes a recommendation.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give teams sentence strips from a scrambled paragraph; students arrange them, explain each choice, and revise the paragraph together.

  2. After reading a short article, ask, “What solution best fits the evidence?” and have groups record agreements and unanswered questions.

  3. Play Build, Question, Challenge: each student must extend an idea, ask for clarification, or offer a respectful counterpoint.

  4. Teams interview the school librarian about a student need, then write one shared proposal using notes from every member.
