What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students contribute ideas, questions, and evidence during group work. They listen, respond to different views, share responsibilities, and combine the group’s thinking into a product or decision.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student arrives prepared, listens closely, and contributes relevant evidence and questions. The student builds on or challenges ideas respectfully, completes an agreed role, and helps the group produce a clear result.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat collaboration as dividing the work and completing separate parts without exchanging ideas. Some dominate, agree too quickly, or make claims without evidence from the text or research.

How to Assess It

Give groups one disputed claim and three short sources. Ask them to reach a position, record one disagreement, and explain how the discussion changed their final response.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give teams evidence cards to sort, label, and arrange into a shared argument with a claim, reasons, and counterclaim.

  2. Ask groups, "When should loyalty conflict with personal values?" and require each student to cite a text before responding.

  3. Play Consensus Countdown, where teams have five minutes to rank four solutions and prepare one reason for their final order.

  4. Have teams review a school policy, gather student viewpoints, and write a joint recommendation for the principal.
