What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students work with a partner or small group to share ideas, ask questions, and listen to others. They help investigate a question, solve a simple problem, or create a drawing, story, or other shared text.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student shares a relevant idea, asks or answers a question, and listens while others speak. The student uses shared materials fairly and helps complete the group’s answer, drawing, or story.

Common Misconceptions

Some children think working together means taking over, copying a partner, or waiting quietly while someone else works. They may struggle to share materials, stay on topic, or accept a different idea.

How to Assess It

Give pairs a picture of two children wanting the same swing. Ask them to agree on a solution and draw it together, then check that each child contributes and responds.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups blocks and a picture card, then ask them to plan and build the pictured object using one shared set of materials.

  2. Ask pairs, “What makes a good class pet?” and have each child share one idea before they choose an answer together.

  3. Play a turn-taking story game where each child adds one sentence to create a group story from three picture cards.

  4. Have groups plan a classroom cleanup by deciding who will collect books, crayons, paper, and blocks, then carry out the plan.
