What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose sentence length, order, and type to match a specific audience and purpose. They revise sentences to make ideas clearer or create effects such as emphasis, excitement, or suspense.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can combine choppy sentences for clarity, shorten a sentence for emphasis, or reorder details to build suspense. They can explain how a sentence choice fits the audience and purpose.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think longer sentences always sound better or that changing a few words changes the sentence structure. They may also use fragments for emphasis without checking whether the meaning stays clear.

How to Assess It

Give students, “The dog heard a noise. The dog walked toward the door. The door opened.” Ask them to revise it for suspense and explain one sentence choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sentence strips with the same ideas, then have them rearrange and combine the strips for clarity, excitement, or suspense.

  2. Write two versions of a playground rule, one for first graders and one for the principal, then explain your sentence choices.

  3. Play Sentence Switch: draw an audience and purpose card, then revise one sentence to match both and earn a point for explaining why.

  4. Compare sentences from a toy advertisement and assembly instructions, then rewrite one sentence so it better serves each audience.
