What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students notice words that stand out in stories, poems, directions, and messages. They explain how a word shapes a reader’s picture or feeling, then choose words that fit the writer’s goal.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a short text, a student can point to a specific word and describe its effect on the reader. The student can replace it with another word and explain which choice better fits the purpose.

Common Misconceptions

Students may call a word good or interesting without explaining what it makes the reader think, feel, or picture. They may choose longer or stronger words automatically, even when those words do not fit the audience or purpose.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: In the sentence The tiny puppy scampered home, circle one effective word. Write how it helps the reader and fits the writer’s purpose.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs word cards from a picture book, and have them sort words into funny, strong, gentle, or exciting groups.

  2. Read two versions of a sentence, then ask which word choice better fits the author’s goal and why.

  3. Play Word Swap: teams replace one plain word in a sentence, then explain how the new word changes its effect.

  4. Compare wording on two cereal boxes, and discuss how each package tries to interest children or adults.
