What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students find specific words or phrases that stand out and explain how they shape tone, meaning, and audience response. They also use purposeful word choices in their own writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students point to exact words and explain how their meanings and associations shape tone and audience response. They can revise language to fit a new audience or purpose and defend their choices.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name a strong word without explaining its effect. They may confuse a word’s dictionary meaning with its tone, or discuss personal reactions instead of audience and purpose.

How to Assess It

Give students a short paragraph and ask them to identify one effective word, explain its effect, then replace it for a different audience.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups printed advertisements to highlight loaded words, replace three choices, and label how each change affects tone.

  2. Ask students to explain which word in a speech excerpt most influences the audience and why.

  3. Play a tone swap game where teams rewrite one sentence using cards labeled formal, sarcastic, hopeful, or threatening.

  4. Compare two headlines about the same event and discuss how verbs and labels guide readers toward different reactions.
