What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine how sentence patterns shape meaning, emphasis, rhythm, and clarity. They identify, evaluate, and revise parallel structures in literary, informational, and argumentative texts.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately identify parallel and nonparallel elements in complex sentences. They revise faulty patterns and explain how the structure affects clarity, emphasis, rhythm, or tone.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think repeated words alone create parallel structure. They may also change verb tense without matching grammatical forms, or label an intentional stylistic break as an error.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Revise “The policy aims to reduce waste, saving money, and cleaner streets.” Then explain how your revision improves clarity.

Ask students to compare two versions of a sentence and write which version is stronger, citing clarity, rhythm, or emphasis.
Play Parallel or Not by displaying sentences for teams to classify, correct, and defend within one minute.
Collect slogans, headlines, or policy statements, then have students identify parallel structure and explain why it makes the message memorable.
