What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students recognize and apply grammar, usage, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling rules in complex texts. They explain how convention choices affect clarity and tone, then revise their own writing for a specific audience.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can spot errors in sentence boundaries, agreement, pronoun use, modifiers, parallel structure, punctuation, and word choice. The student can correct them and explain how each change improves clarity or tone.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat every unusual sentence as wrong, even when a writer breaks convention deliberately for effect. They may also punctuate by sound alone, miss errors in long sentences, or change wording without identifying the problem.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Correct all errors and explain two edits: “Neither of the proposals address the problem, however, each offer useful data. The committee reviewed them careful.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Cut apart a flawed editorial paragraph, then have pairs rearrange sentence strips and add punctuation to create clear, complete sentences.

  2. Ask, “When can breaking a grammar rule strengthen a text?” Students cite one published example and explain its effect.

  3. Run an editing relay with stations for sentence boundaries, agreement, modifier placement, and parallel structure; teams correct one item at each station.

  4. Compare a job application email with a group chat message, then rewrite each for the other audience and discuss which conventions change.
