What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students pause after meaningful sections and put the main point into their own words. They form a mental picture or sketch key details to check that the text still makes sense.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can pause at logical points, state the main idea in their own words, and select key supporting details. Their mental images or sketches match the text and help them explain what is happening.

Common Misconceptions

Students may copy sentences instead of identifying the main point. They may create detailed drawings that are not supported by the text or summarize an entire passage without pausing by section.

How to Assess It

Give students one paragraph from a grade-level text. Ask them to write a one-sentence summary and make a labeled sketch showing two text-supported details.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Cut a short text into sections, then have students pair each section with a one-sentence summary and a quick sketch.

  2. Ask students to explain which words shaped their mental image and how that image helped them understand the section.

  3. Play Summary Relay, with teams reading one section and passing along an accurate ten-word summary before receiving the next section.

  4. Use a news article, pausing after each section to sketch key people, places, actions, or relationships in a simple visual map.
