What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify who created product information and what that source may gain from it. They judge whether claims are reliable, useful, current, and supported by evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can compare an advertisement, a customer review, and an independent report about the same product. They explain each source’s incentive and choose the strongest information using specific evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume popular reviews are accurate or that paid experts are neutral. They may confuse personal opinions with tested evidence or overlook sponsorships, missing details, and outdated information.
How to Assess It
- Give students a product advertisement and an independent review. Ask them to name each source’s incentive and cite one reason the review is more or less useful.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups product claim cards to sort by source, incentive, evidence, and usefulness, then have them defend one disputed placement.
Ask students to write: When should a consumer distrust product information, and what evidence would make the claim more believable?
Play Source Detective by awarding points for spotting sponsorships, unsupported claims, missing comparisons, emotional language, and outdated facts in sample product posts.
Compare phone plans from two company websites and a consumer report, then choose one plan and justify the decision with evidence.
