What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify major events from Jefferson’s presidency and sort them as economic, military, political, or socio-cultural. They explain each event’s causes, results, and effects on different groups.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can explain the Louisiana Purchase, Lewis and Clark expedition, Barbary Wars, Marbury v. Madison, and Embargo Act. They connect these events to federal power, trade, westward settlement, Native nations, and slavery.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think Jefferson consistently followed his belief in limited federal power, overlooking the Louisiana Purchase and Embargo Act. They may also treat westward expansion as beneficial to everyone and ignore its effects on Native nations and enslaved people.

How to Assess It

Give students four events: Louisiana Purchase, Marbury v. Madison, Barbary Wars, and Embargo Act. Ask them to classify each and explain one major result.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have pairs place event cards on a timeline, label each category, and connect every event to one cause and one result.

  2. Ask students to write whether the Louisiana Purchase supported or contradicted Jefferson’s political beliefs, using two pieces of evidence.

  3. Run a matching game connecting Jefferson-era events with causes, results, affected groups, and economic, military, political, or socio-cultural labels.

  4. Compare the Embargo Act with a modern economic sanction using two short news summaries and a chart of intended and unintended effects.
