What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect protections for speech, religion, due process, equal treatment, and voting to the amendments that establish them. They apply those protections to scenarios and explain which government actions are allowed or prohibited.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a scenario, a student names the relevant amendment, describes the protected right, and explains how it applies. The student distinguishes government restrictions from actions by private people or businesses.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often think every constitutional right is unlimited. They may mix up amendment numbers, apply constitutional limits to private actions, or assume voting rights expanded to every group at one time.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Police enter a person’s home without consent, a warrant, or an emergency. Which amendment applies, and what protection does it provide?

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs amendment cards and scenario cards, then have them match each scenario to a right and justify one match with evidence.
Ask students to write whether a school should punish a student for a peaceful protest shirt, naming the right and defending their answer.
Play Rights Relay by reading scenarios while teams hold up the amendment number and explain the protection for one point.
Have students annotate a local news article, circling the government action and labeling the constitutional right involved.
