What Students Need to Do: Students identify problems under the first national government, such as weak taxation, no executive, no national courts, and difficult lawmaking. They connect each problem to a solution created at the Constitutional Convention.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can explain clear cause-and-effect links between government problems and new constitutional powers. They can use evidence from events such as Shays' Rebellion to explain why delegates replaced the earlier system.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse a weak national government with weak state governments or assume the Articles created a powerful president. They may also claim Shays' Rebellion was the only reason leaders called for change.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Choose one weakness of the Articles, explain one problem it caused, and name the constitutional solution that addressed it.

Lesson moves

Give pairs problem and solution cards to match, then have them draw arrows showing how each weakness shaped a constitutional power.
Ask students to write: Which weakness created the greatest threat to the new nation, and what evidence supports your choice?
Run a four-corner game where students move to the constitutional solution that best fixes each weakness you read aloud.
Have groups compare a leaderless class project with one using assigned roles, shared rules, and a way to settle disputes.
