What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how four influential texts changed colonial ideas about lawful government, individual rights, consent, representation, and independence. They place the texts in context and connect specific ideas from each one to colonists' political beliefs.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can name a key idea from each text and explain a clear cause-and-effect link to colonial thinking. The student can distinguish limits on rulers, self-government by agreement, protected rights, and Paine's argument for independence.

Common Misconceptions

Students often treat all four texts as American laws or assume each called for independence. They may view Magna Carta as granting equal rights to everyone or confuse the Mayflower Compact with a modern constitution. They may also mistake the English Bill of Rights for the later U.S. Bill of Rights and treat Common Sense as a government document.

How to Assess It

Give students a four-row exit ticket labeled with the four titles. For each, they write one key idea and complete, "This shaped colonial views by..."

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs four short source cards and four impact cards, then have them match, sequence, and defend each pairing.

  2. Ask, "Which document most changed what colonists expected from government?" Students answer in six sentences using evidence from two sources.

  3. Play a four-corners clue game where students move to the named document, then explain which phrase in the clue supports their choice.

  4. Students compare one current constitutional protection with its English precedent and write a two-step chain showing how the idea crossed time.
