What Students Need to Do
- Students connect each figure to a specific action during Reconstruction. They explain how that action affected civil rights, voting rights, federal policy, or protection from racial violence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can explain how Grant enforced federal protections, Stanton opposed Johnson’s policies, Douglass advocated for equal rights, and Trumbull shaped civil rights laws. They support each claim with an accurate example.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may credit Grant only for his Civil War leadership or confuse Frederick Douglass with later civil rights leaders. They may also assume federal officials agreed on Reconstruction policies or that new laws were always enforced effectively.

- Give this exit ticket: Choose two figures, name one Reconstruction action by each, and explain one effect of each action.
