What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students describe how freedom seekers used an informal network of guides, safe houses, secret messages, and routes to escape slavery. They explain how geography, laws, secrecy, and help from free and enslaved people shaped each attempt. They also explain how the network provided practical aid and challenged slavery.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can use a map and a primary source to explain how one escape might have worked. The student identifies risks, describes the roles of freedom seekers and helpers, and supports claims with evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may picture a literal train, tunnels, or one fixed route run by a single organization. They may assume everyone traveled north to Canada or that Harriet Tubman led most escapes. They may overlook Black leadership, failed attempts, and the danger created by the Fugitive Slave Acts.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Give students a route map and a short excerpt from William Still. Ask them to name two forms of aid and explain why secrecy or geography mattered.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a blank map, safe-house cards, and obstacle cards, then have them plan and defend a possible escape route.
Have students write: Why did freedom seekers and helpers accept severe risks, and what evidence best explains their choices?
Run a source-sort game where teams label each card person, place, method, risk, or result, then correct one another.
Search the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom database for the nearest documented site, then draft a 50-word visitor label.
