What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students track how a beam changes when it meets mirrors, water, glass, and dark surfaces. They explain whether the light bounces, bends, or transfers energy to the material.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly identify each light behavior from an observation or ray diagram. They draw the beam’s path and support their explanation with evidence from the material used.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a straw viewed through water is physically bent or that mirrors produce light. They may also think black surfaces destroy light instead of taking in its energy.
How to Assess It
- Show a flashlight beam striking a mirror, entering water, and hitting black paper. Ask students to label each outcome, draw the beam’s path, and explain their choices.

Ways to Teach It
Set up stations with a flashlight, mirror, water cup, clear plastic, and black paper so students observe and sketch each beam change.
Ask students to explain why a coin under water appears closer than it really is, using a labeled ray sketch.
Play a card sort using photos of sunglasses, mirrors, shadows, prisms, and dark shirts, grouping each by the main light behavior.
Inspect a bicycle reflector, tinted window, and eyeglass lens, then write how each controls light for a practical purpose.
