What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students create a diagram showing infrared, visible light, and ultraviolet as parts of sunlight. They show that white light separates into visible colors with different wavelengths.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student correctly orders infrared, visible light, and ultraviolet from longer to shorter wavelengths. They can use a prism result to explain that white light contains many colors.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think sunlight contains only visible light or that white light is one color. They may also confuse electromagnetic radiation with radioactive material or treat infrared as heat itself.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank spectrum bar. Ask them to label infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, red, and violet, then explain what a prism does to white light.

Shine a white flashlight through a prism in a dark room, then have students sketch and label the colors they observe.
Ask students to explain in three sentences why sunlight contains more than the colors people can see.
