What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify what the researcher changes and what result is measured. They label the changed factor as independent and the measured outcome as dependent.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can read an experiment description and correctly name both variables. They can explain each choice and separate the variables from factors kept constant.

Common Misconceptions

Students often reverse the two variables or label every changing condition as independent. They may confuse constants, such as container size or time, with the measured outcome.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “A student changes water temperature and records how long sugar takes to dissolve. Name the independent and dependent variables.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have groups change paper airplane wing length, measure flight distance, and label the changed and measured variables on a data table.

  2. Students write two sentences about a plant experiment, naming what the scientist changes and measures, then justify each label.

  3. Run a card sort with experiment scenarios, variable labels, and measurements, then have partners correct mismatched sets.

  4. Analyze a bakery test that changes oven temperature and records cookie browning, then label both variables.
