What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the setup that does not receive the treatment or change being tested. They explain how that setup provides a baseline for comparing results.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student correctly labels the control group in a written scenario or diagram. The student explains that any groups being compared should differ only in the tested variable.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse the control group with controlled variables, such as equal light or water. They may think the control receives nothing, even when it receives normal treatment or a placebo. They may also assume any untreated group is valid, even if other conditions differ.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Two identical plants get equal light and water, but only Plant B gets fertilizer. Identify the control and explain its purpose.

Ways to Teach It
Grow two bean seedlings under identical conditions, add fertilizer to one, label each group, and compare growth after several days.
Ask students to write why a medicine test might include a group receiving a sugar pill.
Play a card sort where students match experiment scenarios with the correct control group and tested variable.
Examine a garden pest-control plan with sprayed and unsprayed plots, then explain why the unsprayed plot helps judge the treatment.
