Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students observe evidence of air even though they cannot see it. They show that wind is moving air by watching or feeling its effects on objects.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can use a bag, balloon, or pinwheel to show that air takes up space and can move. They can explain that moving air makes the pinwheel turn.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think air exists only outdoors or when the wind blows. They may also say wind is a separate substance rather than air that is moving.
How to Assess It: Give each student a paper strip and ask, "How can you use this strip to prove that air is moving?" Have them demonstrate and explain.

Lesson moves

Trap air inside a sealed plastic bag, press it gently, and discuss what keeps the bag puffed up.
Ask students to write how they know air is present in a room even though they cannot see it.
Hold a pinwheel relay where students create wind by blowing, fanning, or walking, then compare which method spins it fastest.
Observe a flag, leaves, or windsock outside and record three signs that show the air is moving.
