What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students predict a sensible range before solving. After solving, they use estimation, benchmarks, inverse operations, units, and context to check the result.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student gives a likely range, solves, and compares the result with that range. When an answer does not fit, the student identifies a likely error, corrects it, and explains the check.

Common Misconceptions

Students may trust an exact calculation or calculator display even when the size, sign, or unit is wrong. They may think an estimate must match exactly, or check only their arithmetic and ignore the situation.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Display a worked example from today's lesson, but replace its answer with one having the wrong size, sign, or unit. Ask students to circle the clue and write one check.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs counters and answer cards, then have them build a model and sort answers into sensible and impossible piles.

  2. Post an incorrect solution from the current unit and ask students to name the first clue that the answer cannot be right.

  3. Play Reasonable or Not: reveal a problem and proposed answer, then award points for checks using estimation, units, or inverse operations.

  4. Use a grocery receipt, travel time, or measurement estimate, and have students flag one total that does not fit the situation.
