What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students add and subtract vectors by combining corresponding components. They also draw vectors on a coordinate grid and use head-to-tail arrows to show each result.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly add and subtract corresponding vector components. They draw equivalent results with scaled arrows, using head-to-tail addition and the opposite vector for subtraction.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add vector magnitudes instead of adding corresponding components. They may reverse the order in subtraction or draw vectors tail-to-tail instead of using the head-to-tail method.

How to Assess It

Give the exit ticket: “Let u = ⟨4, -1⟩ and v = ⟨-2, 3⟩. Find u + v and u - v, then sketch both results.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs grid paper, rulers, and arrow cards to build u + v and u - v using head-to-tail placement.

  2. Ask students to explain in writing why subtracting vector v is the same as adding the opposite of v.

  3. Play a matching game where students pair component expressions, simplified vectors, and correct diagrams.

  4. Map two legs of a walking route as vectors, then find the net displacement by adding the vectors.
