What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students calculate dot products, cross products, vector magnitudes, and angles from three-component vectors. They choose the correct product and interpret scalar or vector results with units.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can use the dot product to test perpendicularity or find an angle. The student can use the cross product to find a perpendicular vector, area, or torque and check its direction.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often return a vector for a dot product or a scalar for a cross product. They may reverse cross product order without changing the sign, omit magnitudes in angle formulas, or use the wrong right-hand direction.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Let u = ⟨1, 2, 0⟩ and v = ⟨2, -1, 3⟩. Find u · v and u × v, then state the angle and parallelogram area.

Ways to Teach It
Build two vectors on a taped 3D corner using dowels, then model the right-hand rule and calculate the cross product.
Write: When would a dot product answer a question that a cross product cannot, and what does each result mean?
Play a card sort matching vector pairs to dot product, cross product, angle, area, perpendicularity, or projection calculations.
Use force and displacement vectors to calculate work, then use position and force vectors to calculate torque on the same machine.
