What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students describe one vector using ordered components, unit vectors, or a magnitude and direction angle. They convert between these forms using trigonometry and quadrant information.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students convert a vector accurately without changing its magnitude or direction. They use the component signs to choose the correct direction angle and can verify their result.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may swap the horizontal and vertical components or lose negative signs. They may use the wrong quadrant for the direction angle. Some confuse magnitude with either individual component.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Given v = ⟨−3, 3√3⟩, write it in i,j form and trigonometric form, including its magnitude and direction angle.

Ways to Teach It
On graph paper, students draw assigned vectors, measure each direction with a protractor, and record all three forms.
Ask students to explain how component signs determine a vector’s quadrant and direction angle.
Run a card sort matching component, i,j, and trigonometric forms of the same vectors.
Give a 20 mph wind blowing 35° north of east, then have students find and interpret its horizontal and vertical components.
