What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students plot complex numbers as points and directed segments on the complex plane. They show sums and differences with vectors, products through scaling and rotation, and conjugates as reflections.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given two complex numbers, students accurately plot each result and show the geometric construction used. They connect addition and subtraction to vectors, multiplication to scaling and rotation, and conjugation to reflection.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may multiply real and imaginary coordinates separately instead of multiplying lengths and adding angles. They may reflect across the imaginary axis when finding a conjugate. Subtraction order also causes reversed vectors.
How to Assess It
- Give students z = 1 + 2i and w = -2 + i. Ask them to plot and label z + w, z - w, zw, and the conjugate of z, showing each construction.

Ways to Teach It
Use graph paper and arrows to build z + w tip to tail, then verify the endpoint by adding coordinates.
Ask students to explain why conjugating a complex number reflects its point across the real axis.
Give pairs operation cards and complex number cards, then have teams race to plot each result correctly.
Model a rotating, enlarging spiral by repeatedly multiplying one plotted complex number by a fixed complex factor.
