What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students plot a complex number using its real part as the horizontal coordinate and its imaginary part as the vertical coordinate. They find the point’s distance from the origin and direction angle, then convert between a + bi notation and trigonometric notation.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately plot a complex number and identify its magnitude and angle. They convert between a + bi and r(cos θ + i sin θ), using the correct quadrant and exact values when possible.

Common Misconceptions

Students may swap the real and imaginary coordinates or plot the imaginary part on the horizontal axis. They may choose an angle in the wrong quadrant, forget equivalent angles, or use degrees when radians are expected.

How to Assess It

Give the exit ticket: “Plot z = -√3 + i, then find its magnitude and write it using magnitude and angle.” Look for r = 2 and θ = 5π/6.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students coordinate grids, rulers, and protractors to plot a + bi, then measure r and θ and write the polar form.

  2. Ask, “Why do 1 + i and -1 - i have the same magnitude but different angles?” Students explain with diagrams.

  3. Run a matching game with cards showing complex points, a + bi forms, magnitudes and angles, and polar forms.

  4. Model a rotating signal as a point on the complex plane, then connect its horizontal and vertical components to its magnitude and angle.
