What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide whether a translation, rotation, reflection, or dilation keeps distances between points unchanged. They use diagrams, measurements, or coordinate rules to support each decision.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly classify translations, rotations, and reflections as distance-preserving transformations. They recognize that a dilation with a scale factor other than 1 changes distances and can verify this with measurements or coordinates.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think reflections change lengths because the figure looks reversed. They may also assume every transformation preserves distance, including dilations with scale factors other than 1.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Circle each rule that preserves distance: (x,y) → (x+3,y−2), (−y,x), (−x,y), and (2x,2y). Verify one choice using A(0,0) and B(3,4).

Ways to Teach It
Trace a triangle on patty paper, translate, rotate, and reflect it, then measure corresponding sides before and after each move.
Ask students to explain why a reflected figure keeps its side lengths even though its orientation changes.
Sort transformation cards into preserves distance and changes distance, then defend each placement using coordinates or measurements.
Compare resizing a digital photo with rotating or flipping it, and identify which actions change distances between selected points.
