What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students gather data about income, savings goals, contribution rates, employer matches, returns, fees, and inflation. They organize the data in a spreadsheet and test different retirement scenarios. They use the results to choose and defend a plan.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students build a working spreadsheet with clear labels, formulas, and reasonable assumptions. They compare scenarios and explain which plan best meets a stated goal. They also identify limits in their projections.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use simple interest instead of compound growth. They may ignore inflation, fees, taxes, employer matches, or changing contribution amounts. Some assume projected returns are guaranteed.
How to Assess It
- Give students a spreadsheet with salary, contribution rate, employer match, and projected return. Ask them to calculate the balance at retirement and name one change that would close a savings gap.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs retirement scenario cards, then have them arrange contribution, match, return, fee, and inflation cards before building a spreadsheet.
Ask students to write which matters more for retirement savings, starting earlier or contributing more later, using spreadsheet evidence.
Run a spreadsheet challenge where teams adjust one variable at a time and earn points for reaching the goal with realistic assumptions.
Use a sample employer benefits sheet to compare retirement plans, including matching contributions, fees, vesting rules, and projected balances.
