What Students Need to Do: Students sort financial information into assets and liabilities, then enter the values in a spreadsheet. They total each group and subtract liabilities from assets to find net worth.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly classify each item, total both groups, and calculate net worth as assets minus liabilities. Their spreadsheet uses accurate cell references and updates when a value changes.
Common Misconceptions: Students may add liabilities instead of subtracting them. They may confuse income with assets or expenses with liabilities. Spreadsheet errors often come from missed cells, incorrect ranges, or numbers entered as text.
How to Assess It: Give students six assets and four liabilities in a table. Ask them to build a spreadsheet, show both totals, and use a cell formula to calculate net worth.

Lesson moves

Give pairs asset and liability cards to sort, enter into a spreadsheet, total, and use a formula to find net worth.
Ask students to explain in writing how a person can own valuable assets but still have a negative net worth.
Run a spreadsheet error hunt where students find and fix incorrect ranges, missing entries, and formulas that add liabilities.
