What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use spreadsheet formulas to calculate costs, revenue, and profit in business situations. They test different values and use the results to answer questions or make decisions.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students organize given data in a spreadsheet and use formulas to calculate total cost, revenue, and profit. They can change price, cost, or sales values and explain how the profit changes.

Common Misconceptions

Students often treat revenue as profit or subtract costs in the wrong order. They may omit fixed costs, confuse total cost with unit cost, or enter numbers instead of formulas in spreadsheet cells.

How to Assess It

Give students fixed costs of $600, a unit cost of $8, a selling price of $20, and sales of 75 units. Ask them to build spreadsheet formulas for cost, revenue, and profit, then explain the result.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs price, unit cost, fixed cost, and sales cards, then have them build a spreadsheet that calculates profit.

  2. Ask students to write which change would improve profit most: raising price, lowering unit cost, or increasing sales, and defend their choice.

  3. Run a break-even race where teams adjust spreadsheet inputs to find the smallest sales quantity that produces a nonnegative profit.

  4. Use a school fundraiser menu to estimate costs, revenue, and profit for several sales totals in a spreadsheet.
