What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use a differential equation to find the slope at points on a coordinate grid. They draw a slope field and trace the solution curve that passes through a given initial point.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students calculate slopes at selected coordinate points and draw each segment with the correct direction. They sketch a smooth curve through a given initial point and identify which displayed curve fits that condition.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat each segment’s slope as a y-value instead of a direction. They may ignore the initial condition, draw sharp turns, or let solution curves cross when only one slope is defined.
How to Assess It
- Give students y' = x - y and the initial point (0, 1). Have them draw segments at six labeled points and sketch the solution curve through the initial point.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a laminated grid and slope cards; they place short line segments at assigned points, then trace a curve through one initial point.
Ask students to explain why two solution curves should not cross where the differential equation gives only one slope.
Run a matching game with differential equations, slope fields, initial conditions, and highlighted solution curves, with students justifying every match.
Model cooling coffee with a temperature slope field, then use the starting temperature to sketch and interpret the predicted cooling curve.
