What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students evaluate definite integrals by using known integral values and algebraic properties. They reverse limits, combine adjacent intervals, split intervals, and handle sums, differences, and constant multiples.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students use given integral values to find related values without finding an antiderivative. They correctly reverse limits, split or join adjacent intervals, and apply sums, differences, and constant factors.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat an integral as always positive, even when limits are reversed or the function is below the axis. They may add values without checking interval endpoints, or forget to apply a constant factor to the entire integral.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Given ∫₁⁴f(x)dx = 7 and ∫₄⁶f(x)dx = -2, find ∫₆¹f(x)dx and ∫₁⁶3f(x)dx. Ask students to name the property used for each step.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students integral cards with matching reversed, combined, or scaled forms, then have them pair equivalent expressions and explain each match.

  2. Ask students to explain why reversing integration limits changes the sign but not the size of a definite integral.

  3. Run a relay where teams use one property per step to simplify a chain of definite integral expressions.

  4. Use a velocity graph and known interval integrals to calculate net displacement across combined time intervals.
